The new Bangalore airport that has been proposed at Devanahalli is far away from every inhabited place in Bangalore. It becomes just too far for someone just taking a regional flight of one hour. And the flight timing for most of the cities from Bangalore will be well within a couple of hours. It is plain impractical to locate the airport at such a God-forsaken place. Imagine the time taken to travel to the airport in your city being equal to the time taken to travel from one city to another!

So, what could we do? Since already millions of dollars have been invested into this can we find some way of making this a win-win for everyone involved? Is it possible? Of course, it is going to be the most developed and high-tech airport the country has ever seen and all that. So, can we also make it accessible please?

Unless approach roads are made better, it will be easier to drive to Chennai than go to Devanahalli :-)

There have been examples of Airports being far away from the city.. the airport in Kuala Lumpur is 75 KM away from KL… but you can get there in 1 hour..

I don’t see it being that easy here.. unless there are feeder roads from all areas into a feeder road that gets you to the airport without going through residential localities, villages etc…

Its easier said than done… hopefully someone is planning this…

Infrastrcuture is not the only problem! It’s the road/driving sense of the people which cause most of the traffic jams!!!
Everybody wants to go first.. .everybody wants to cut the red light.. everybody wants to drive on the footpath and reach faster! That’s where all the troubles start….

If only everybody stuck to lanes.. if only everybody followed ALL traffic rules… there won’t be any traffic problem… whether roads are good or bad! But alas! people fail to understand this!

Most of the airports are far off from the city. The present airport was miles away too… only bangalore has grown so much now that the airport is in the heart of the city..;-)

But yes! the options which you have suggested are really good. It will definitely improve the qaulity of travel to the airport.

Also there should be many approach roads to the airport… the main reason why there are SO MANY traffic jams on the present airport road is becasue there is only ONE road which you have to take finally (from wherever you come) to get to the aiport. So obviosuly it will get clogged… so will be the case for even bigger airport and more flights.

Changing mindsets of people while driving in India is well… quite an uphill task.

You are right about the existing airport. It is so true. I guess that’s the reason they are building the new airport so much away from the city.

I have some more info now reg the accessibility of the new airport. I shall put it up in my next post. Hope that brings a ray of hope to all of us! :)
