We sent Paheli to the oscars last year ahead of a few classics like Black, Swades, Hazaaron khwahishen aisi and I showed my dissappointment here.
Keeping with the trend I thought they had pick Krrish, since the other two (Lage Raho Munnabhai and Rang De Basanti) were very good for the panel to decide.
Wisdom prevails. Rang De Basanti is picked. I wouldn’t have a problem with Lage Raho either but then RDB is also a good pick. Let’s hope it wins us an Oscar.
I am not getting into the argument as to why we should crave for recognition from the western world and all that. All I am saying is that, since we have sent an entry to the oscars, I am hoping it will win. Period.
Me too wish to see a Oscar for Indian Films. I like the Swades, and like to watch krrish, RDB.
RDB is bullshit movie, there is no chance of it winning an oscar, im pretty sure.
no sane movie critic would vote for this bullshit
If not for the marble-headed people at the helm of affairs, India’s entry could well have been WATER.
Now, pass the chips around while we witness a Indian kills Indian on world stage.
WATER!?
That Made-Exclusively-for-Oscars Film!?
Compare that with Phaniamma(hoping you know Kannada… weren’t you the guy who wrote that asesome comment about Mysore?) and you will see the difference between a film that really speaks out about an issue and this one that has women screeching through the film like Down Syndrome affected Children(Merci! Forgive me for this cruel analogy… I am very sorry about those cute innocent kids.) and the mythical Rakshasas reincarnated as men.
IMHO, Parineeta or Omkara would have been a better choice.
Adi:
I AM dissapointed! Nopes this movie is not an Oscar material! The movie was good no doubts about that… but no… Oscar! hah! FAT chance.
Omkara would have been a better choice as it had some power packed performances.
Are we going to show to the world that now we are ready to shoot down our own leaders? Is that the way to move forward?
ravi:
Viky’s comment was sarcastic :)
Oh yes! Phaniamma was a fantastic movie!!!
I hardly read news and so this was news to me.
I did not like Lage Raho and so I am very glad they did not choose it.
RDB was ok but surely not Oscar material. As Shark says, the message it gives it not right.
I feel ‘Omkara’ would have been a better choice…let the world know that we Indians, from the land of elephants and snake-charmers, can adapt and potray Shakespeare so beautifully !!
Adi, agree with you on RDB being a great pick. It has some essense in it and immensely enjoyable.
oscar material or not, who can say !
It is for people to interpret what message it gives. If understood in its entirety , i don’t think it is about we killing our leaders, it is only that we need a revolution to change the system.
Jeevan:
I feel once we win one Oscar, there is going to be a deluge of Oscars! Like Sachin’s centuries! So, we are just waiting for the first one to come and I really hope that RDB wins this time!
Vatsan:
So, you didn’t like the movie. And about Oscars, well, I am hopeful. Let’s see.
Viky:
So true! You don’t want Pepsi Awards a la Pepsi TV [The ground breaking concept!] ?!
Why can’t they even release Water in India? I just fail to understand! Give it an “A” certificate or an “A+” or whatever crap, just release the damn thing. I also have been deprived of the music of the movie. ARR gives himself a 10/10 for it.
And hey, with RDB and Water entering the Oscars, we have two entries with AR Rahman’s music. I know it isn’t very significant, but then I am just so glad that finally AR Rahman is scoring music for movies that get noticed on a Global level which he really deserves.
Sorry for the total digression!
Ravi:
I haven’t seen Water, so can’t really comment on it.
Parineeta, wow, what a movie. What a heroine it threw up! i think that’s the best part of Parineeta.
Omakara :( Missed it man! Missed it! I am going to watch it at the first chance that I get!
You might now say that I have no right to pick RDB ahead of Omakara even without having watched Omakara! So, I go to the theatre where it’s playing at the next chance I get. Spare me please.
And yeah Ravi:
Haven’t watched Phaniamma either. But will watch it soon, since you are recommending it.
Shark:
So, your pick is Omkara. I need to watch it now.
And your view on RDB means that you haven’t viewed the message it is giving in its entirety. I wrote this post sometime back regarding the movie. It addresses your points! (I could predict you would come up with points like these, and hence wrote a post 5 months back itself!)
And it looks like I need to watch Phaniamma immediately. Will do so.
Hardu:
Every Indian news channel is airing this news. Since your idea of TV means CNN only, I understand your problem! :)
Did not like Lage Raho! Yeah, I remember you telling me about that. Maybe with time you will learn to appreciate what the movie has to offer!
You should also read the post I have recommended to Shark. Distressing to see so many myopic views about the movie.
Jo:
Can you see me running to the DVD shop?! [Ok, yeah, I know I don't make such a pleasant picture running!] It’s now imperative that I watch Omkara.
Preethi:
Finally one person agrees with me! So glad about it!
And whatever you say is so right! So true! But see, there are so many people who have taken the message that “We need to kill our leaders” :(
Lage Raho… was good too. But, when you translate it to the Western crowd, the humour and punch gets lost. I sometimes feel bagging UN Secretary General’s post is much more easier than Oscars!!!
Me too sad that so many people think otherwise about RDB. I like the usage of the words “myopic views”..
I did not deny that RDB is a nice movie. But it is definitely not an oscar material.
I also know that the message it is trying to convey is NOT “kill your leaders”. It just says that we need a revolution kinds…
But the ending of the movie is not powerful.. it lets you down..:(
But then, don’t we all know that the western audience cannot relate to this. Not that I care about oscars.. why should we get recognition from westeners? That’s altogether a different topic anyways!
Kishor Cariappa:
Your comment is so so true! Totally agree to it! The punch gets lost in the end when translated! Good point!
Preethi:
:(
Shark:
I have seen a lot of people having an issue with the ending being not as powerful as the entire movie. Wonder why? Seriously, where’s the problem? Am open to discussion!
For me, it doesnt matter if they win or lose.
What matters most is that they are sending THE BEST PRODUCT.
All the very best for RDB Team.
Cheers

VamC:
Yo man! Agree with you totally! Long time no see.
Lage Raho has nothing to offer. The part one was any day a much better movie. In this part all that Gandhi thing was very irritating. That was forced comedy! The first part was really hilarious and would crack one up. But in this part though a few parts were good, on the whole I would just rate the moving as being OK and nothing great at all.
So, with time or no time, I wouldn’t appreciate this movie. It is a question of personal choice anyway!!
Initially I was disappointed because they accepted RDB instead of Lage Raho Munnabhai . But Now Dont need to panic. Lets Support RDB now. Jitega Bhai Jitega RDB jitega. India Jitega.
Hardu:
Fine! I atleast had a hope, now you killed that also! ;) You have decided not to like “Lage Raho Munnabhai”, nothing I can do about it I guess. Not that I wanted to. Just hoped that it would happen!
Princeparas:
*With flags and banners lobbying for RDB and standing on top of everything I can* Shouting along with you “Jitega bhai jitega, RDB jitega”!! :)
The ending was over-dramatic. Nobody shoots down people who are saying something over the radio!
In a country where even terrorists are pardoned, this was too much to take!
And it also gives a picture that not all revolutionists succeed.. every single one died right?
It could have been more positive. Like say they were all punished for the murder but in the end they were successful in conveying the message to people.
