A R Rahman and Film related and Music11 Dec 2006 04:06 am

Fifty-six songs from eligible feature-length motion pictures are being considered in the Original Song category for the 79th Academy Awards®, it has been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The original songs, along with the motion picture in which each song is featured, are listed here in alphabetical order.

On Tuesday, January 16, the Academy will screen clips featuring each song, in random order, for voting members of the Music Branch in both Beverly Hills and New York City. Following the screenings, members will vote to determine which three, four or five songs become nominees in the category.

Want to know why I am writing this here?

A R Rahman has three of his songs out of the 56 on the list.

“Chan Chan” from Water

“Khalbali” from Rang De Basanti

“Lukka chuppi” again from Rang De Basanti

It’s only fair that I get excited about this! I hope he atleast gets a nomination. Because I well and truly believe that his music is the best that the world would ever get to hear.
But I have a doubt regarding how much these Americans will understand Indian music and the interpretation of the words and connect it with the spirit of the movie. In my opinion, “Lukka Chuppi” is an all-time classic. Whenever I hear the part, “Kya bataun maa tujhe kahaan hun main” in A R Rahman’s high pitched voice – I can feel the pain. It sincerely deserves the award. Of course, I haven’t heard any of the other 53 songs, so its obvious my sampling is wrong! But let’s cheer atleast!

    Jo:
I will sponsor a treat for all the regular readers of my blog if he gets a nomination. And I really have no idea what I will do if he wins. I would probably be standing frozen at that moment, because no other moment can be happier than that for an A R Rahman fan! :)

    Pradeep:
That’s an echo of my thoughts! :)

Isnt that a great thing? All these days we have been feeling pity for the rest of the world who could not know ARR. Now they have got a chance. I hope at least one song makes it into the final round.
BTW, when I go to UK soon, no prizes for guessing which is the first CD I am going to buy. We have been deprived of Water for long enough now. Let me know if you need a copy ;)
