My favourite movie for the last year ‘Rang De Basanti’ is out of the race for the Oscars in the “Best Foreign Feature Film” category.
‘Water’ is in the shortlist of the 9 films that will be considered for the nominations. It is still in the race for the final award. I don’t know why it is called a ‘surprise’ when they decided to shortlist ‘Water’ in this category. It was Canada’s official entry and if it wins the award I am sure everyone will pounce to take pride that it’s a movie made by an Indian with all Indian actors and all that. Right! But we just didn’t have the courage to release it in India.
I am waiting for January 23rd, when the nominations for the best song will be announced. A R Rahman has three songs in the race. Keeping my fingers crossed!
By the way, here is the review of ‘Guru’ by Richard Corliss for TIME magazine.
Adi: Nice review in the times… looks like Bollywood is starting to get major mindshare… heres something that happened a couple of years ago.. I am walking to my gate at Chicago’s O’Hare airport and happen to pass by a record store.. guess what they were playing on their TV screens? The songs from Bride and Prejudice…
Vijay:
While Richard Corliss is a well-known supporter of Indian cinema in the US, there is certainly a growing support and awareness about Indian cinema. Your Chicago airport incident is a case for example.
With crossover artistes like Shekar Kapur, Deepa Mehta, Gurinder Chaddha, A R Rahman and others, I am sure the western world would be foolish not to sit up and take notice.
Like i said earlier RDB is not good enough for the oscars :) its what i consider feel good movie, not good enough for the oscarc
Vatsan:
So, your stand is vindicated! :)
But I hope with RDB as the base we can make better movies and tell Hollywood that we can beat them in their own den!
[...] RDB was out of the race. But ‘Water‘ is in the final list of nominees. Sad that India couldn’t have it in its name. But still a reason to cheer. Fire and Earth were classics. Looks like the last movie in the trilogy is an absolute winner. Waiting for February 23rd when the movie will be released in India. And just two days after that, the final awards will be announced. Let’s hope ‘Water‘ wins. And surprise surprise, ’Volver‘ by Spanish Pedro Almodovar has missed the final list. I see a good chance for ‘Water‘. [...]
Adithya;
Lage raho Munnabhai had a better chance than RDB.
Ganesh Kumar:
That’s anyone’s guess!
BAFTA thinks RDB was better! What say?!
I feel RDB can never compete with other movies Oscar’s list. Not that i dint like that movie, but i just feel RDB is not worth that.
The nomination from India getting better i can say. I remember they nominated “JEANS” Ash movie late 90s. Funny eh?
Bachodi:
I don’t agree at all with the first part of your comment! RDB is not worth an Oscar? That’s a strong statement to make. Just that I differ completely. BAFTA considered to be the British Oscars gave a nomination to RDB. It was probably a matter of recognizing the inherent value of the movie.
Coming to the second part: “Jeans” was a shocker actually! I don’t know what they saw in it to send it to the Oscars!
Personal views!!
I feel Omkara was better movie to RDB. I also think Lagaan was one more unfortunate nomination to Oscars. Personal views again.
Bachodi:
Personal views, yes! So let’s leave it at that!
You actually got “Lagaan” into the conversation and I am still letting that pass by. Well, well, I can’t believe this is happening!
I agree with bachodi that omkara was better than RDB. I think the difference between RDB and Omkara was the music . In one the music brought the rest of the movie down and in the other the music MADE the movie. ;-)
