RDB was out of the race. But ‘Water‘ is in the final list of nominees. Sad that India couldn’t have it in its name. But still a reason to cheer. Fire and Earth were classics. Looks like the last movie in the trilogy is an absolute winner. Waiting for February 23rd when the movie will be released in India. And just two days after that, the final awards will be announced. Let’s hope ‘Water‘ wins. And surprise surprise, ’Volver‘ by Spanish Pedro Almodovar has missed the final list. I see a good chance for ‘Water‘.
A R Rahman misses out on a nomination in the best original score category after having three songs in the final 56. Better luck next time Rahman! :)
Hello,
:) First time here…Yepp..i too feel that water could win it this time. I saw t intervw in ndtv…it seems like they have great scope & sure to win..
Lets hope! :)
And sad..rahman had to wait…
Hi… Water is not such a great movie after all… cliched scense bad casting and a typically idiotic storyline.
She also tries to incite idiotic sentiments by quoting Manu Smriti and probably one of the worst lines from it at the beginning of the movie thus smearing the entire MS… which has sio many other nuggets of good advice.
Completely unwarranted…. but that is why the movie has been nominated. And BTW it is not India’s choice for the Oscars…
Marutham:
Welcome! :)
Let’s hope for the best! And according to a CNN-IBN Hindustan Times poll, 9 out of every 10 Indians pray. So, let’s pray too! :P
Ramanan:
Welcome! :)
Haven’t seen the movie but from what I have heard and read about it, it seems to be in the (don’t butcher me for saying this!) Satyajit Ray class of movies. Yours is the first totally negative comment about the movie I have seen. That only means I need to see it and get back to you! :)
But yeah, I agree with you regarding the misuse of our traditional texts. Even ‘Matrix’ did that. But they did that well and without being disrespectful.
I know it isn’t India’s entry to Oscars. Probably you haven’t read my post fully – I have lamented thus: “Sad that India couldn’t have it in its name”
Adithya,
I think these days Hollywood movies which did not win Oscars;yet big hits(MINORITY REPORT,Spideraman etc.)
were much good than those which won.Becaue I’ve watched Crash recently. It is the worst movie I’ve seen& would ever see!(I felt like sleeping, something which I did not experience in even many bad, boring movies!)Read my eview here-http://sganeshkumar.blogspot.com/2006/11/get-paid-to-watch-these-movies.html
Ganesh Kumar:
Will read and get back to you!
Adithya;
No response from you!Just waiting for the same.
S.Ganesh Kumar:
According to me Crash was the best movie by far of 2004/2005 (as the movie was initially released in 2004). I selected this movie because it doesnt talk about illegal relationships unlike Capote and Brokeback mountain. I understand that it wouldnt make sense for you as you havend faced/seen racial discrimination. As for me i have seen exactly what the movie said when i was in LA.
Mysorean:
I also hope WATER wins but it seems Pan’s Labyrinth would grab the honour.
Sundeep:
Good point!
Ganesh Kumar:
I think Sundeep has given you some food for thought! :)
I finally watched Water yesterday. The movie is very well made, with lot of detail given to show the beautiful backdrops of Sri lanka.
The movie moves at slow pace but its never boring. It always keeps you guessing about the next scene and the overall content is well presented. The great thing about this movie is even though the characters in the movie are so wrenched with poverty and sadness they never cry. It almost feels like they have taken it for granted just like what happens in real life. The movie caters to my liking other than some 5 mins just before the end.
I would rate the movie ****.
Sundeep:
Good you liked it! I too hope to watch it sometime! :)
Thanks for your comment!
I saw ‘Water’ over the winter break, and it was powerful… and unrelenting.
It made me uncomfortable, and that’s where its real strength lies- the ability to shake you out of your comfor zone, and shove the reality full throttle- the mark of a great movie :)
Arundhati:
Even I saw the movie sometime back. It wasn’t as impressive I thought it would be actually. Too many cliches. And unnecessasrily subtle. Subtle to the extent that you wonder did we miss anything?
I also was uncomfortable but that was with the casting choice and the dialogues.
Anyways, don’t really want to pan the movie left, right and centre. You liked it. I kinda disagree! :)
Read my review of ’300′ here:

It’s great.Watch it soon!
If at all you want to watch a movie which got ‘International acclaim’,watch Veyyil. It’s very good, though not great. As for its acclaim check it here:

I think Cannes is a bigger platform for international movies than Oscars, which mostly gives to English movies only, even if they nominate many foreign lang. movies.
By the way, here’s my review of Veyil.See it:
